Chapter Seventeen

I looked down at Arthur who puffed out his feathery chest. “I can easily fly you into the keep, but once in there the door is barred. I myself tried it only a short while ago and could not enter. We must think of another way to slip inside.”

Pup lunged forward and let out a bark. I blinked at him until he set his giant werewolf paws on my thighs. Realization dawned on my face and he wagged his tail in response. “The holes!”

Duncan smiled down at my familiar. “Yes. Our friend here is quite the digger, isn’t he?”

Arthur wrinkled his nose. “Under normal circumstances I would refuse such help, but alas-” He gave a great sigh, “-these are not normal circum. . .circumstances.” He lifted one wing and drew it over his forehead. “I. . .I suddenly do not. . .feel-” He slumped over and fell to the ground in a heap of feathers.

“Arthur!” I shouted as Pup gave a terrified yelp.

I scooped up the bird, who managed to lift his head and focus his eyes on me. “The. . .the master. . .something. . .wrong. . .”

My heart skipped a beat as I whipped my head up to Duncan’s bleak face. “Like Leana?”

He nodded. “Undoubtedly. That means we must get inside as soon as possible.”

Pup let out a bark and hurried over to the far side of the gates. He proceeded to dig into the earth, and now I understood how he was able to perform his previous infiltrations of Percy’s castle. Dirt and stones, many as large as my fist, flew into the air at a speed that made the rocks bounce when they hit the ground. I scurried back with my bundle and Duncan did the same, and together we watched my werewolf burrow like a gopher on twenty cups of coffee. In half a minute Pup had disappeared into the hole of his own making, and in another thirty seconds more he popped his head up and let out a bark.

“I think that’s our signal,” I guessed as I clutched Arthur against my chest.

“We should leave them here,” Duncan told me as he leaned Leana’s back against the castle wall.

“You sure they’ll be safe?” I asked him as I reluctantly set Arthur in Leana’s lap.

Duncan nodded at the gates. “We don’t know what trouble lays in wait for us within these walls. Even if we can protect ourselves, protecting two others would make it all the harder.”

I knelt in front of them and laid a hand on each of theirs. Well, on one wing and one hand. “We’ll be back as soon as we can.”

Arthur set his other wing over my hand. “Let. . .let me come. . .with you.”

I smiled as I shook his head. “Duncan’s right. You need to stay here, but the minute we find Percy I’ll tell him you’re okay. That’ll make him feel better instantly.”

Arthur nodded before he slumped back against the wall. I regretfully moved away and joined Duncan and Pup at the hole.
